Shawn R. Perez

Shawn R. Perez began his legal career in 1989 in San Clemente, California working for the Law Office of Richard Blum as a paralegal primarily responsible for law and motion, trial preparation and appeals.

 

He graduated from Western State University College of Law in December of 1992, was sworn in to the California State Bar in June, 1993.  Mr. Perez opened his own office shortly thereafter and began primarily a criminal practice with a focus on federal crimes and federal asset forfeiture cases.

 

He is admitted as a member of the California State Bar, Hawaii State Bar, Nevada State Bar

 

He is Admitted in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, all of the Federal District Courts of the State of California, Federal District Court of Hawaii, Federal District Court of Nevada, District Court of Colorado, Southern District of Texas, United States Tax Court

 

Mr. Perez has handled Federal Court Cases in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington D.C., Washington and Wisconsin; and handled state civil, criminal and forfeiture cases in Alabama, Arizona, California, Nevada, and New Mexico.

 

In November, 1993, Mr. Perez became involved in an organization that was instrumental in the reform of forfeiture laws - Forfeiture Endangers American Rights (F.E.A.R.)  Because of his involvement with this organization he was fortunate to be a member of the defense team inUnited States vs. $405,089.23 in United States Currency, 56 F.3d 41 (9th Cir. 1994) (Brief in opposition to Request for hearing en banc and United States vs. $405,089.23 in United States Currency, decided sub nomine, United vs. Ursery, 518 U.S. 267,  116 S. Ct. 2135 (1996) (referred to by those involved as “405K”.)  His involvement was that of brief writer.

Latest criminal trial: United States v. Cliven Bundy, et al (Rick Lovelien) on August 22, 2017; 2016-cr-00046 (D. Nev.).  Defendant was facing 101 year sentencing exposure.  Despite a 4 year offer on the case, Defendant decided to proceed to trial where he was acquitted on all 12 charges.
